8 Simple Ways to Prevent Piles (Hemorrhoids)

Quick Summary

  • Haemorrhoids are inflammation in the blood vessels in the walls of the anus and rectum.
  • Haemorrhoids can be treated in a variety of ways, but it's best to prevent acquiring them in the first place.
  • Simple lifestyle changes can prevent haemorrhoids from interfering with our daily lives.

Inflammation in the blood vessels in the walls of the anus and rectum is referred to as piles or haemorrhoids. These blood vessels are normally present in the anal region. They act as shock absorbers for defecation. Due to the inflammation in these blood vessels surrounding the walls of the anal area, the formation of haemorrhoids takes place. Haemorrhoids lead to discomfort and rectal bleeding.

Haemorrhoids can be treated in a variety of ways, but it's best to prevent acquiring them in the first place as they usually cure on their own with simple measures. As wisely said, Prevention Is Better Than Cure; thus, simple lifestyle changes can prevent haemorrhoids from interfering with our daily lives

Diet for Preventing Piles

Get Enough Fibre

People having constipation related problems are prone to Haemorrhoids. Adding a fibre rich diet is one of the easiest and most natural ways to treat constipation related problems like haemorrhoids.  Taking 25 to 30 grams of fibre in the form of pears, strawberries, avocado, apples, raspberries, broccoli, beets and carrots each day is good for our bodies.

Some other popular sources of fibre include:

Legumes – Kidney Beans, Split Peas, Lentils, Lima Beans, Black Beans, and Edamame

Whole grains – Millet, Barley, Popcorn, Bran Flakes, Oatmeal, Quinoa, and Brown Rice

Nuts – Almonds, Pistachios, Walnuts, and Fresh Coconut

Seeds – Sunflower Seeds, Poppy Seeds, Chia Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, and Flaxseeds

Vegetables – Spinach, Tomatoes, Kale Artichoke, Green Peas, Broccoli, and Brussels Sprouts

Fruits – Avocado, Raspberries, Pears, Apples, Carrots and Bananas

Stay Hydrated

Adequate hydration is necessary for healthy bowel movements because fibre without water intake makes stools hard. Therefore, for successful haemorrhoid prevention, drinking plenty of water is necessary. It not only reduces straining of the bowel system by preventing constipation but keeps the whole digestive system working smoothly.

Stay Active

Exercise is the most effective strategy to keep your intestines clean by removing waste around. Regular exercise aids weight loss stimulates bowel movement and prevents constipation caused by dry and hard stool.

Some of the relevant exercises are :

Cardio – Cardio exercises include walking, running, swimming, cycling or dancing, which are one of the best exercises one can do to keep the blood flow and digest food. They increase breathing, boost the heart rate and stimulate the bowels. The easiest way is taking a short 10-20 min walk daily.

Yoga – It is another excellent form of exercise to keep the bowels moving. Yoga not only massages the digestive tract but also increases the blood and oxygen flow in the body. Yoga is advantageous for the entire body; however, certain poses specifically deal with digestive issues.

Pelvic Floor Exercises – These exercises focus on strengthening the muscle layers at the bottom of the pelvis, which includes the bladder and bowel, thus aiding them in pushing stool through the colon more efficiently.

Avoid Heavy Lifting

Exercise and haemorrhoids are involved in a love-hate relationship, which means a person with haemorrhoids must avoid weight-lifting and similar movements that increase strain and abdominal pressure. Such activities can cause more harm than good.

Don't Hold Nature's Call

Ignoring nature's call could aggravate the condition of Haemorrhoid.     Holding nature’s call can lead to strain around the anal area, which can cause Haemorrhoids.

Avoid Straining

The most common cause of severe pain or bleeding associated with haemorrhoids is straining and pressuring the veins in the rectum. Heavy weight lifting, such as bodybuilding can put strain.

These activities lead to inflammation in the rectum and cause rectal injuries, drawing blood into the veins of the surrounding region. Therefore, a person with haemorrhoids must avoid straining and sitting on the toilet for long.

Good anal hygiene

The anal area must be cleaned thoroughly and gently with a washcloth, wet toilet paper, or a disposable wet wipe (unscented) to avoid any infection.

Take A Sitz Bath

A sitz bath with warm water and baking soda for a duration of 10 to 15 minutes relieves the pain. If possible, repeat the same with cold water.
